Our residential design process is thoughtful, collaborative, and carefully structured. We guide clients through each stage with clarity and experience, ensuring decisions are grounded in both the site and the way the home will be lived in.
From early conversations through to consent-ready documentation, our role is to bring structure to what can otherwise feel like a complex process.
An Overview of Our Design Process
Every project is different, but our process follows a clear sequence that allows ideas to be tested, refined, and resolved in a considered way. Each stage builds on the one before it, providing clarity around scope, timing, and decision-making.
1. Understanding the Brief & Site
Every project begins with listening. We take time to understand our clients’ goals, lifestyle, priorities, and budget, alongside the physical and regulatory characteristics of the site.
This stage often includes an initial review of planning controls, site constraints, access, orientation, and broader context. Establishing this understanding early ensures the design responds meaningfully to both the site and the way the home will be lived in over time.
2. Concept Design
Building on the brief and site understanding, we develop initial design concepts that explore spatial arrangement, relationships between rooms, orientation, and overall form.
Concept design is an iterative stage. We test ideas through drawings and diagrams, refining the design in response to discussion and feedback. The aim is to arrive at a clear and compelling architectural direction before progressing further.
3. Design Development
Once a preferred concept is established, we develop the design in greater detail. This stage focuses on refining layout, form, material relationships, and spatial quality.
Design development allows decisions to be tested and resolved, ensuring the design intent remains clear as technical considerations are introduced. Coordination with consultants may begin during this stage, depending on the project requirements.
4. Consent-Ready Documentation
With the design resolved, we prepare detailed documentation suitable for council consent. This typically includes drawings and supporting information required to assess compliance with relevant planning and building regulations.
We coordinate with consultants as required and liaise with councils to help streamline the consent process. Our experience working with councils across Christchurch and the wider South Island helps reduce uncertainty at this stage.
5. Ongoing Support
Depending on the project, we may continue to provide support beyond consent, assisting with design clarifications or coordination as the project moves toward construction.
The level of involvement beyond consent is tailored to each project and discussed clearly with clients as part of the engagement.

Throughout the design process, our focus is on clarity, transparency, and thoughtful decision-making. We aim to make the experience of designing a home structured and manageable, allowing clients to engage confidently at each stage.
Where This Process Applies
We apply this process across a range of residential projects, including bespoke homes, lifestyle and rural properties, and holiday homes and retreats. While we are based in Christchurch, we work with clients across Canterbury and the wider South Island.
